11 Ways To Maximize Space In Your Small Apartment

11 Ways To Maximize Space In Your Small Apartment

Sharing is caring!

Recently, everyone has been loving tiny homes and they have truly been on the rise.

Is it because they can be less pricey, because of the coziness smaller spaces exude or because of their practicality (everything is at the tip of your fingers, pretty convenient hm)? There’s no correct answer, the reasons differ. But what stays the same is their rising popularity.

However, what happens when you find your dream tiny home and suddenly realize you have no space, or that it feels cramped up? Worry not, because I have 11 excellent ways to maximize space in a small apartment or a house ready to show right away!

So, without further ado, let’s get going!

1. The Magic Of Floating Shelves

Having cabinets with open shelves is great, but the floor space is quite limited so we can’t really stack it with a bunch of cabinets, right?

Well, why not get some use of the wall space? Floating shelves are an excellent way to add extra space inside your tiny home! You can stack them any way you want and make room for all those books and miscellaneous decor items!

What’s amazing about them is that they’re not just practical but also incredibly aesthetically pleasing when decorated nicely! And, they have the power to be the main source of the personalization and warmth of your home by adding things like family photos on them!

2. Create And Remove Space With Foldable Furniture

You have some work to do on your laptop? Okay here’s a table! You’re done? BAM – the table is no longer there! Sounds like magic but it’s not – it’s foldable furniture!

It’s amazing how much room you can save with something like this and it’s so practical!

Another famous example of foldable furniture are those couches that can turn into beds! Your bedroom can turn into a living room during the day, or alternatively your living area can suddenly be a bedroom at nighttime! Pretty genius!

3. Use Natural Light

When it comes to this advice, it’s more of a feeling you get in the space rather than something changing literally but it’s an unmatchable feeling! Of course, I’m talking about natural light!

Huge windows or glass doors can do so much for your space by letting sunlight grace your indoors area! The more natural light the room has, the bigger it seems!

4. Useable Items Can Be Decor Too

If you’re in a small space, that’s already quite cramped yet is still missing decor, it can be quite tricky. But here’s an excellent solution: use your already existing items as decor!

You have books spread around and a plant with no place to grow? Just stack your books making a tiny shelf out of them and place your plant right on top! It’s convenient and looks amazing!

It’s interesting how many things that you use in your everyday life can be excellent decor items once you let your imagination run

Take a TV for an example! You could put up a frame around the TV and make it look like an art piece! It’s so easy to do, takes up no space and yet it makes the look of the room achieve the next level!

5. Create Floor Space With A Floating Vanity

I’ve already mentioned floating shelves, but that’s not the only floating thing that can save up space! Get ready for the floating amenity!

Can you imagine how much space you’d get in your tiny bathroom if you switched your regular vanity with the floating one? Just picture some extra room for those cleaning products, laundry baskets or towels!

You’d gain so much without losing anything at all!

6. Hidden Storage Rooms Are The Key

One thing I’ll never get tired of saying is definitely that hidden storage is the key to tiny homes!

One of my favorite things ever is when I see stairs with drawers or cabinets inside of them. How incredible is that? Sometimes we simply can’t avoid stairs taking up some space in our home, maybe they lead us to the loft. But we can use them to an advantage!

Another incredible way of some extra storage is drawers under the couch or a bed! Once again, a furniture item we simply can’t avoid but that can be used for more than one thing which is sleeping or resting!

Fun fact: this photo of the cabinets inside of the stairs is not the only way this home saved up on space! If you want to see what else was used, take a look at this article

7. Utilize Vertical Space

It’s not just the floor space that can be used, it’s the vertical one as well! There’s no reason for your walls to be left empty!

I’ve already mentioned floating shelves as one way of using up your wall space, but another one is floor-to-ceiling shelves!

Why not cover up a portion of your wall with a floor-to-ceiling shelf of your choice and then stack it up with a bunch of books, plants, photos, CD albums, anything you like!

You can even go one step further and make an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling shelves! I won’t lie, that’s definitely on my dream list! I would love to make my mini private library!

8. Mirrors For The Illusion Of Space

Similar to the effect the natural light brings, the mirrors bring in as well. At the end of the day, the more mirrors you use and the bigger they are, the more light reflects creating the illusion of a bigger space!

And oftentimes, just that illusion of extra space is enough to feel less cramped in your tiny home!

Isn’t that cool? You add something to your room and it makes it seem bigger rather than smaller!

9. Big Carpets For The Win

A common mistake when furnishing and decorating tiny spaces is using a tiny carpet. No, you don’t want to do that!

Sure, you won’t want to choose a carpet that goes all the way from one size of the room to another, but make sure your carpet is big enough to go under the couch and your side tables!

This way your space will not only feel more cozy and comfortable with something soft under your feet rather than hardwood floors, but will certainly have a feeling of a much bigger place too!

10. Keep It Tidy

The most simple and most important thing when it comes to maximizing small space should be this – keep it tidy!

That means no messy blankets over the couch, table filled with snacks from last night and a book you’ve been stuck on for weeks. And especially, nothing that takes up floor space when it really shouldn’t!

It’s incredible how tidying up your small space can make a difference. When I’m cleaning my room and simply remove a couple of tiny papers and pens from my desk I can see a difference! Now imagine that but in a whole, entire room!

11. Hooks And Pegboards

Pegboards are a game-changer for maximizing kitchen space, blending practicality with style.

This setup turns walls into functional storage, keeping pots, pans, and utensils within easy reach while freeing up valuable counter space. The customizable design lets you arrange hooks and shelves to fit your needs, adding a personal touch to the organization.

It’s a simple, clever way to make your kitchen both efficient and visually appealing.

Have any of these tips caught your attention and will you be using any of them? Maybe the floating vanity for the bathroom? Or perhaps would you like to experiment with the hidden storage space? Do let me know!
