Surroundings make half the house. Who here agrees with that statement? I’m sure most of you just answered with “I do” inside your head.
How could they not? It’s the view you get through your bedroom window, the scenery you appreciate when you have breakfast on the balcony, something that finds its way into your home.
I’m positive it’s an un-anonymous thinking that one of the best possible surroundings is the one with a lake or a river. The beautiful sight and calming sound of water has that something that always makes us feel so serene!
That’s why I decided to look for a couple of lake homes and share with you 10 lake houses that will instantly make you fall in love with them! Of course, I have found a great variety of them so that there’s something for everyone! Without further ado, let’s start with the list!
1. Excelsior Springs, Missouri, United States
This is perfect for those morning breakfasts I mentioned! Just look at this wrap-around porch! Waking up in this cabin during an early and chilly morning, heading outside with a hot cup of coffee in your hands, I can already picture it so well! I’m craving it so bad!
Personally, I wouldn’t even need any adventures here, I’d enjoy simply appreciating this 15 acre private lake and feeling like I’m in heaven on earth.
But, for those who like adventure, you’ll love to hear that the lake is available for kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, swimming and fishing! What would be your activity of choice? Or would you simply sit at the porch and admire the scenery?
2. Grand Marais, Minnesota, United States
Are you looking for a peaceful getaway? Do you want to feel as if you’re the only living being in the entire world, save for the birds and butterflies?
This gorgeous cabin nestled between the trees and the water is perfect for you then!
With a 180-degree view of Lake Superior and a 20 acre parcel of land, you can experience complete rest of mind! This cabin and its location are like a synonym for the word “serenity”!

3. Oneonta, New York, United States
This A-frame cabin is the tiniest place on this list but it doesn’t mean it’s the least cozy! In fact, I always think that the tinier a home is, the more cozy and warm vibes it holds!
The creek is located right next to the house so if the height of the water allows you to do so you can even tube or kayak! If we’re talking about hotter months during which the height is a little smaller, just grab a chair and enjoy the cooling of the water beneath you!
How nice would it be to sit next to this soft stream of water while reading a book and drinking something refreshing? Ah, a dream!
4. Marquette, Michigan, United States
Now get ready for something absolutely spectacular! I couldn’t make this list without mentioning the biggest log cabin in the world – Granot Loma!
Built between 1919 and 1923, this wonderful log cabin is not only rich in history but in its surroundings as well! Sitting right next to Lake Superior, it has its own harbor where you can visit with your own boat or a yacht!
I did say I have a variety of homes prepared, so if you’re not the type of person to enjoy smaller cabins such as the one mentioned above, how about visiting one of the biggest ones?
If you’re interested in this old stunner and would like to see more photos of it, take a look at this article which goes into great detail by doing a full tour of this place!
5. Indian River, Michigan, United States
I had to add one more A-frame cabin, there’s simply too many amazing ones that it was hard to stop myself at just one!
This one is, however, a little bigger than the previous one so if you’re up for something more spacious or if there’s more of you visiting, this is the one! I mean, there is a firepit, a big dining table, a hammock, a big grill and so much more outside of the house! That screams spacious!
Aside from all those things located outdoors, 2 kayaks and 2 paddleboards await as well for some fun time on the nearby lake!
I just love how adaptable this cabin is! You can prepare a romantic getaway for you and your partner or a fun hangout getaway for your friend group and it’s going to be perfect for both!
6. Summerton, South Carolina, United States
When preparing this list, I had in mind to show you how lakefront places are not just cabins though! I know we see them very often, but plenty of other homes can have locations as excellent as all those lakefront cabins do!
Just take a look at this stunning home in South Carolina!
This luxurious home includes a pool and a swim spa, aside from the grand interior of 4 bedrooms, chefs kitchen and more! Yup, you can certainly find places like this near the lake!
It’s not just near the lake, it has a whole private dock! Sounds like something from a movie, doesn’t it? But nope, it’s very real and very gorgeous!
7. Ransom Canyon, Texas, United States
Still on my hunt for different and unique places that you wouldn’t have imagined once the term “lakeside home” was mentioned, I came upon the most perfect one!
This home looks like a sculpture. It is a sculpture! You can experience sleeping and residing inside a home that looks like an absolute art piece whose spot is somewhere in a museum!
Located by the Lake Ransom Canyon, the most beautiful views decorate this already stunning place even more! If you’re an artistic soul, what are you waiting for? Why are you not already there enjoying this otherworldly piece of architecture?
8. Tahuya, Washington, United States
Don’t you just love it when you’re looking up homes at the beach or near a lake and you see that “one minute away” phrase? This is the case here! The lake is right in front of your cozy cabin! Just go down the stairs and you can enjoy the fun!
Is rowing in one of the single kayaks your definition of fun? Or do you prefer swimming? Whatever your choice is you can rest assured that you’ll have the best possible experience here while also being super at peace!
Once you’re done having that aqua fun you can make some dinner and sit around the firepit near the lake while listening to the peaceful sound of water. Is there any better way to end the day?
9. Hampden, Maine, United States
Something I love about this house is how “regular” it looks!
A simple family home with some greenery and a wrap-around porch. And then someone asks you more about where you live and you answer with the “Oh yeah, I have a lake behind my house”. Now that’s a pretty amazing answer!
What a cool little cottage this is, I can’t be the only one wishing I had grown up here! Growing up here would be the experience of a lifetime I’m sure! I don’t think I’d ever want to move out!
10. Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire, United States
Would you say you rather lean over to more modern builds than the rustic ones? Would you opt for the combination of metal and wood rather than pure wood? Then this modern house is the one for you!
Located near the lake, I can’t seem to decide if I like the exterior and its surroundings or the magazine cover-like interior better! Good thing there are floor-to-ceiling windows, immediately ready to provide with the most gorgeous lake views!
If you would like to see the interior that left me so in awe, make sure to check out the full tour of this home in this article!
What was your favorite home out of all of the ones in the list? Are you liking some of the cabins I mentioned or were those different and more unique houses actually the ones that sparked your interest?
And finally, let me know if you would like to see even more cabins neatly resting beside the lake! I have a ton of lake houses ready that I would like to show you, this was just a little glimpse inside the lakefront world!
