When designer Hillary Kaplan bought a spec house in Stone Ridge, New York, she set out to transform it into a warm, welcoming mountain retreat perfect for gatherings with loved ones.
Her vision focused on personalizing every detail and maximizing sleeping space so family and friends could comfortably stay together.
Kaplan collaborated with NevelHaus and INC Architecture & Design to customize the five-bedroom, five-bathroom home, reimagining the main floor layout and adding layered lighting for warmth.
Inspired by the Hudson Valley’s artsy charm, she created a cozy 4,400-square-foot haven where meaningful moments with her extended family could unfold.
1. Living Room

Kaplan wanted every detail of the home to celebrate its breathtaking mountain views, framed by towering windows that let nature steal the show.
She chose a soft, earthy color palette that mirrors the landscape and filled the rooms with local pottery and midcentury art, adding a sense of timeless character. Vintage pieces crafted from natural materials bring warmth and depth, making the space feel soulful and lived-in.
For Kaplan, creating a true mountain retreat meant designing an open, airy main living area that embraced the vast, peaceful beauty just beyond the walls.
2. Kitchen

Kaplan loves how the waterfall edge of the silver wave marble becomes the stunning focal point of the kitchen, capturing everyone’s attention the moment they walk in.
She describes it as looking almost like petrified wood, seamlessly blending an organic vibe with the kitchen’s modern functionality. The walls painted in Cloud Cover by Benjamin Moore create a soft backdrop, while pendants from Allied Maker and chairs from Lee Industries add layers of style.
Custom cabinetry by Form and counters from Peter Brooks Stone Works Inc. complete the sophisticated, nature-inspired look.
3. Pantry

Stepping through the glass door into the pantry feels like discovering a hidden gem, thanks to the delicate patterned wallpaper by Peter Fasano that instantly elevates the cozy space with a touch of charm.
The cerused black oak cabinets not only look striking but also keep the daily essentials of a busy family neatly out of sight, maintaining a sense of order and sophistication.
Together, these thoughtful details transform the pantry into a stylish, functional retreat tucked right off the kitchen.
4. Dining Area

A vintage cabinet sourced from Hollywood at Home brings a cozy nod to the rich, earthy hues of the Hudson Valley right into the dining space, setting a warm and inviting tone.
Overhead, a light fixture from Bone Simple Design casts a soft glow across a sturdy table by Four Hands, perfectly paired with comfortable chairs from Lee Industries.
Simple candlesticks from Lostine complete the look, adding a rustic elegance that makes every meal feel special and connected to the natural beauty outside.

6. Kids’ Room

This charming guest room is perfect for hosting sleepovers, with a cheerful row of cozy beds inviting everyone to settle in for the night.
A neutral color palette keeps the space feeling peaceful and effortlessly blends with the home’s serene aesthetic. Each bed features headboards from Norwegian Wood, while sconces by Lostine provide a warm glow.
Elegant shades from Hartmann & Forbes, roomy wardrobes by Four Hands, and whimsical wallpaper from Cole & Son complete a space that’s both playful and restful.
7. Primary Bathroom

A sleek mirror from Arteriors hangs above the vanity, reflecting the warm glow of elegant sconces by Allied Maker. The beautiful vanity from Vanguard Furniture anchors the space, combining practicality with timeless style.
Together, these thoughtful details create a tranquil atmosphere perfect for unwinding and recharging at the end of a busy day.
8. Guest Bathroom

Warm white oak paneling adds texture and a cozy contrast, making the space feel grounded and inviting.
A playful touch comes from the whimsical wallpaper by Fayce Textiles, while a vintage rug softens the floor underfoot, tying together all the elements for a unique and welcoming retreat you’ll never want to leave.
9. Beautiful Design

This striking bathroom balances modern and rustic elements with a mix of textures and materials. Warm wood paneling frames sleek black cabinetry, while a sliding black door reveals a charming nook lined with soft pink pegboard and a woven basket.
The shower stands out with deep green tiles in a vertical layout, accented by small hexagonal tiles on the floor for added interest.
White hexagonal marble tiles brighten the floor, and a colorful vintage rug adds a playful, inviting touch to the sophisticated space.
