One thing about me is that I love a good tips and tricks article. They always seem to inspire me in a new way! Whether that is by reading something I’ve never known before or making me see things from a different perspective.
However, instead of reading that kind of an article today, I decided to share a couple of my own tips with you!
They’re not just any kind of tips though, I’m talking about interior design tips, and we all know how important those are. I mean, it’s where we live and spend most of our time! So, get ready for 12 secret interior design tips that will surely make your house a home!
1. Decorate With Plants
There’s no need to rack your brain over which decor items to choose, greenery is always a good way to go! And I literally mean always because it matches each and every aesthetic!
That pop of color adds so much freshness to your living space and makes it seem so much more lively! You can truly never go wrong with adding plants!
Now, when it comes to which type – that’s your choice! You can opt for some bigger plant gracing the corner of your room, or a hanging one sitting neatly on one of your floating shelves.
2. Make Use Of The Entire Room
How often do you see living rooms with couches sitting against the wall with a tiny table in front and a whole bunch of empty unused space? Quiet often I’d assume.
But why do that? If you have all of that space right in front? Use it up! Experiment with different layout options!
You could position a table right in the middle of the room and proceed to surround it by couches, sofas and chairs, perfectly using up every millimeter of space! Afterwards you could add cabinets, or already mentioned plants in the corners and up against the walls!
3. Don’t Leave The Ceiling Basic
When we decorate our living spaces we usually pay attention to the walls and the floors. Are the walls going to be painted over, will the floors have carpet or hardwood floors, etc. But what about ceilings?
Most of the time when we look up, we find a blank, white ceiling. Even in quite interesting rooms!
Of course, if that’s your intention and style then it’s okay, but if you leave it white because you simply don’t think about it then here’s your reminder that you can decorate your ceiling as well!
Paint it over with some vivid color, add glossy paint, or maybe use a warm toned shade for a cozy look of the room! Just take a look at the dark green ceiling of the photo above. It adds so much deepness and warmth to the kitchen!
4. Decorate The Bookshelves The Right Way
I’m all about personalization and adding whatever you like on your bookshelves. However, with that said, do think about how you’re displaying your items!
You don’t want to put all of your books on one side of the shelf and all other decor items on the other. Or fill up one shelf with books stacked to the brim, while the one next to it has one single plant on it.
Organize it so that everything feels balanced! Let’s say you have 6 books and two shelves. You could position four standing upright in one shelf, and then stack the other two on the other shelf with a potted plant on top! Wouldn’t that look so much better?
5. Wallpaper The Bathroom
We all know how common tiles are when it comes to bathrooms, especially white ones!
My first recommendation is to look into some other colors when it comes to tiles, you don’t have to go only for white color, but my second and main tip is wallpaper!
You can add so much life to the bathroom by using all kinds of wallpapers! From the ones with tiny flowers that may add a vintage feel to some classy ones with shapes that may make it seem more elegant!
6. Add Wood For The Cozy Vibe
If you want your living space to have that cozy feel, you’ll definitely want to add some wooden details! I’m talking about wooden shelves, wooden cabinets, wooden decor!
And, if you want to go one step further, you can try out wooden walls! They will immediately make your home feel like the coziest cabin!
Pro tip: If you aren’t able to have wooden walls, try using a wallpaper with wooden print! It will certainly do the job!
7. Pay Attention To Curtains
Believe it or not, curtains make a very big impact on your living space. How could they not when they cover such a big portion of the wall, especially the floor-to-ceiling ones!
So, it’s important to think of what kind of feel you want your room to have before choosing which curtains to get.
If you’d like some cozy vibe, you’ll want to opt for curtains which have both light fabric and light color. You don’t want sunlight to hit your, let’s say, hot pink curtains making the entire room pink, do you?
Or, if you like your room to have some more character and are going for the artsy vibe, feel free to experiment with curtains too! They can also be an amazing piece of decor!
8. Look Into Different Hardware Options
We’re not looking at just the color and shape of the cabinet, but its handles too. We don’t look at the size and the color of the sink, but its faucet as well! I mean, all those things make the room what it is, so why pay them any less attention just cause they’re smaller?
Just look at the photo above! The golden handles, golden faucet and a golden towel rack make this lovely bathroom feel so luxurious! Sure, the wallpaper and the cabinets surely play a role in that as well, but the hardware takes it to the next level!
9. Bring In The Natural Light
Windows, windows, windows, and one last thing – windows.
Natural light can make a room go from “zero to hero”! It makes the room feel so bright which not only makes the interior space more beautiful, but it affects our mood too (in a good way of course!)
An alternative to windows are glass doors! They can easily serve as floor-to-ceiling windows and add sunlight inside your space!
Not to mention how nice it is having all those windows when there’s a lovely view in front, it’s as if you have a real life art piece on your wall!
10. Play With The Lights
Overhead lightning is great, but ambient one is where it’s at!
Switching from the strong overhead lightning to a bunch of warm toned lamps makes a huge difference! Trust me, your room will feel so much more cozy and homey!
What’s great is that you can play with ambient lighting all you want! Do you want those tall arched lamps? Maybe smaller ones? Or perhaps some fairy lights on the wall and candles on the table? The choice is all yours!
11. Use A Statement Piece
You found an incredible piece of furniture but you’re too scared to get it because it may not match your other pieces. Maybe it’s too much. That, right there, is wrong thinking!
It’s actually an amazing idea to get one statement piece that stands out and draws everyone’s attention and then build around it with more simple details.
How well does this big and bold, dark green couch in the photo above match with the soft features of the wooden table and otherwise minimalist decor? The balance is found just right!
12. Spin The Color Wheel
When it comes to decorating your interior space, you want to have fun! And one way of having fun is playing with colors!
Plenty of times people decide to go for a specific color and decorate in its different shades, such as pastel purple, dark purple and vivid purple. But, why not spin the color wheel and choose a color that’s exactly the opposite of purple? Yup, purple and yellow – a pretty interesting match!
Studying the color wheel can introduce you to a whole new world of good matches, so you’ll definitely want to check it out once you start decorating your interior space!
